Tutorials for Catalog and Spectroscopic Analysis

eBOSS Tutorials

Many of the BOSS tutorials that demonstrate how to work with spectra are also applicable to eBOSS: these tutorials can be found here.

Notebooks that demonstrate clustering measurements can be found below.

Large Scale Clustering by S. Alam
The first tutorial introduces the idea of 2 point correlation function and walk you through various things one needs to think about while making such measurements. You can go through an example of a periodic box with particles on a regular grid and its analytical predictions.

The second tutorial builds up on the first one and explains the 2 point function for cosmological measurements and walks you through a simulated galaxy catalogue. Finally it discusses certain aspects of observation and guides you through similar clustering measurement for SDSS DR7 sample.

These tutorials are also available in Binder for online execution.

SPIDERS Tutorial

The best way to interact with the SPIDERS spectra and data products is through their Value Added Catalogs. These are all listed on the SPIDERS description page, with links to their files, data models and individual descriptions.

TDSS Tutorial

For basic background information on TDSS, please consult the DR16 web pages describing TDSS and its target selection approaches, as well as the selected primary TDSS publications referenced on those pages.

But as a representative, specific, example for accessing spectra through DR16 from the TDSS Few Epoch Spectroscopy (FES) sub-program on dwarf carbon stars (C-stars):

(1) Open the DR16 Science Archive Server (SAS) optical spectrum search page, and click on Bitmasks.

(2) Then under the newly displayed SAS window, click next on EBOSS_TARGET2 which provides access to most TDSS spectra (including those in this example on dwarf C-stars, a full list of the EBOSS_TARGET2 bitmask is given here).

(3) An additional window should pop up, in which you turn On the spectroscopic target flag (for this example case) that is denoted as '22: TDSS_FES_DWARFC', and then Apply that selection near the bottom of this pop-up window.

(4) This should then return you to a previous page but now with the appropriate TDSS dwarf C-star flag set. Click the Search button, and the SAS will return a table towards the bottom of the page with links allowing access to the various TDSS FES dwarf C-star spectra.

Note: An analogous set of steps, selecting the appropriate alternate target bitmask flag under EBOSS_TARGET2 step above, will similarly return spectra for each of the other TDSS subprograms (or e.g., even spectra for all TDSS programs if turning On the full suite of TDSS target flags simultaneously).
